"You want a CrossFit shoe that contains responsive foam for cushioning...without being too soft or squishy," says Henley. If a shoe has excessive cushioning, like a running shoe, it can make you feel unstable during weighted movements like squats, presses, deadlifts, and more. It also hinders your ability to grip the ground, unlike a flatter shoe.

Most CrossFit training shoes have a heel drop between 3mm and 9mm. This is the ideal amount of drop for a wide range of CrossFit movements, including running, rowing, squatting, box jumps, and double-unders. Larger heel drops compensate for limited ankle mobility, allowing individuals working on improving their mobility to achieve positions they otherwise couldn't.
