Our Top Picks for the Best Stability Shoes for Running
Most runners find that having a neutral gait is more efficient.
Lakota GambillOverpronation is when the foot rolls inward excessively during the running motion.
Lakota GambillOverpronation happens when you push off from the big toe and second toe, causing inward rolling of the foot. This is normal, but it can lead to ankle or shin pain if your gait exaggerates this motion. That's where stability shoes come in. Tech brands incorporate features like "bars," "rails," and "medial posts" in the midsoles of these shoes to help align your feet and reduce the rolling-inward motion. Brooks and Altra use guide rails to steer your feet and promote a smoother heel-to-toe transition.
361 Degrees’s Strata 3 has denser, reinforced foam on the inner side of the midsole for extra support during inward foot rolling.
Trevor RaabBrooks’s Adrenaline GTS 20 has flexible bumpers along its medial side to encourage a straighter footstrike during toe-off.
Trevor RaabAltra’s guide rail is reinforced into the medial side of the Ego midsole of the Provision 6, providing stability.
Lakota GambillSome Mizuno shoes have a plastic Pebax plate that supports like a medial post but offers increased flexibility with its unique zig-zagging structure.
Trevor RaabHoka One One shoes have J-shaped outsole frames that provide a wide and stable base, resisting excessive inward rolling.

It slightly rolls the inner arches outward, distributing pressure more effectively and stabilizing excessive motion at the ankle, making your runs much more comfortable.
The Kayano 28 also features FLYTEFOAM Blast™ technology that enhances grip with every footstrike. The signature ASICS GEL cushioning system beneath the rearfoot and forefoot provides excellent shock absorption that remains effective even after covering heavy mileage.

Nike React Infinity Run Flyknit 3
- Increased cushioning in the heel and ankle
- Breathable, sock-like Flyknit upper
- Rocker shape promotes a smooth ride
The Infinity Run may not be considered a traditional "stability shoe" due to its unique stability features. Instead of using a medial post, Nike has incorporated a high arch and a horseshoe-shaped guide rail at the rear of the shoe. These features aim to prevent overpronation without compromising the experience for neutral runners. With the addition of a flared-out forefoot and wide base, testers found the Infinity Run to deliver a secure and planted feeling. The Bouncy React foam provides plush cushioning and shock absorption, while the improved collar padding enhances comfort around the ankle. Overall, the Nike React Infinity Run Flyknit 3 is highly regarded as a reliable daily trainer and a great choice for recovery runs.
Brooks Glycerin GTS 19
- Soft midsole and comfortable upper
The Brooks Glycerin GTS 19 offers stability with its holistic guide rails system. This stability shoe is slightly stiffer than its neutral counterpart due to the denser foam on the lateral and medial sides that act as bumpers to reduce knee movement caused by overpronation. Despite the added support, the shoe still allows for foot flexibility during push off. Featuring a DNA Loft midsole, the Glycerin GTS 19 provides responsive cushioning and joint-friendly support for recovery runs and longer distances. While it may not be the top choice for speed sessions, testers appreciate the increased heel cushioning and the slightly softer feel compared to the Adrenaline GTS.
Mizuno Wave Inspire 18
Now 30% Off
- Wave plate provides stability
- Soft and supportive ride
- Comfortable mesh upper for a secure fit
- Slightly clunky heel
- Low energy return
- Becomes hot during runs
The Mizuno Wave Inspire 18 is a trusted stability model that offers a soft and supportive experience. While it shares similarities with the Wave Rider, it provides extra midsole support for overpronators. Featuring a reshaped zig-zagging TPU wave plate, the Inspire 18 helps stabilize the underarch and reduce pronation forces. The plate works in conjunction with the Enerzy foam in the heel and the full-length top layer of U4ic, both of which deliver cushioning and a softer feel underfoot. Testers noted that there was slightly too much cushioning in the heel, but overall, the shoe offers a springy and comfortable ride for road running.
Altra Provision 7 - Zero Drop Option
When I initially received the Altra Provision 7, I was not aware that it was a stability shoe. However, after comparing it to other models from Altra, it became evident.
To me, this is a positive indicator. It means that the shoe didn't give me the sensation of something drastically changing when I first wore it. But upon comparison, I realized that it effectively limits excessive pronation.
By default, Altra's wider base and foot-spreading capability naturally assist in alleviating overpronation, especially when combined with foot strength exercises and other discussed techniques.
In terms of cushioning, the Provision 7 falls in the middle range. I personally chose to continue running in it over the less cushioned Escalante and the more heavily cushioned Olympus.
- Zero drop shoe
- 8.2 oz women’s, 9.6 oz men’s
- Moderate cushioning
- Well-suited for wide feet
